The Story of Appetite Direct & Events

From day one, Nigel wanted Appetite Direct to work at the highest level, as both a leader in event catering but also as a company founded on an ethical approach. In an industry known for low pay, long hours and poor working conditions, it was his ambition to deliver the highest standards, but to do this while respecting, rewarding and developing the skills of his team – and while doing so, he wanted to promote and support local suppliers and businesses too!

The measure of success was to be not just about strong financial performance, but also to achieve success by delivering challenging and creative bespoke catering.

Our culture remains based on mutual respect, team work, fairness, creativity and a desire to continually improve. That’s what sets us apart from other catering and event companies.

 

Quality on the plate

Our food reflects this focus, using the best of Scottish produce, in season and sourced locally to deliver the highest quality on the plate.

Appetite’s extremely talented chef team bring the same energy and passion to every menu. They work with our inventive, diligent events team – led by our Director of Events, Philly Nicholson – and take time to really listen to clients, to help deliver a much more tailored product. That challenge is easier today, with our current premises boasting a large, state-of-the-art kitchen. (Our original, tiny premises in Howe Street remain a fond memory for many clients, but not for the chef.)

 

Event catering is an art

Appetite works extensively with arts organisations and the third sector, supporting a number of charities and Festivals such as the Edinburgh International Science Festival, Edinburgh International Book Festival, Edinburgh International Film Festival and the Edinburgh International Festival itself – becoming its Official Catering Partner in 2013.

We also work closely with Crisis, The Prince's Trust, The Soldier’s Charity and we support Castlebrae Community High School, providing work experience and full-time positions as part of our dynamic and dedicated team for both the students at this local school, and for homeless people.

 

Delivering something unique

Today, Appetite Events has grown into a well-respected, independent, award-winning event catering company with 19 permanent members of staff and 70 part-time, casual staff.

Charley’s mantra in 2003 – ’failure is not an option’ – remains as pertinent today as it was then. As the company has grown in size and reputation, so have the opportunities to work with new clients on bigger and more challenging events. There literally are never two days the same: and the sense of satisfaction we achieve from delivering something unique is immense.

Nigel wouldn’t change our mantra for anything – it remains a true motivator for him, and the whole team here at Appetite Events.

 

What’s next for us?

After doubling our turnover last year and taking on some of our biggest events to date, we are undergoing a rebrand and have launched this, our new website.  We hope you’ll agree it more accurately reflects all that we offer.

We have big plans for the coming year too, no spoilers… but watch this space!
